Risingbd Desk: A lot of us are in the habit of storing food and then reheating it at the time of consumption. But what if you were told that reheating certain foods actually make them toxic?

Here are some foods that you should never reheat.

Potatoes: Potatoes lose their nutritional value if reheated. Even if you let them rest at room temperature for a long time they can actually become toxic and cause nausea or illness, and even food poisoning.

Rice: In case of rice (either brown or white), the way you store them can lead to problems. Raw rice contains spores that get turned into bacteria which can survive even after the rice is cooked. When the cooked rice is left at room temperature, these can multiply and may produce toxins that can cause diarrhea and vomiting.

Eggs: A morning staple and powerhouse of protein, reheating eggs at a high temperature can make them toxic which can cause havoc in your digestive tract.

Chicken: Just like mushrooms, chicken is highly rich in proteins, which get negatively impacted by reheating. This can actually cause digestive troubles. If you really want to reheat cooked chicken, you can do that at low temperature for a longer duration. The best way to consume stored chicken is to put it in a cold salad or a cold sandwich.

Spinach: Like many other green leafy vegetables, spinach is rich in nitrates and iron. When reheated, these nitrates can convert into nitrites and other known carcinogens (a substance capable of causing cancer in living tissue).

Oils: Grapeseed oil, walnut oil, avocado oil, hazelnut oil, and flaxseed oil all have very low smoke points. That is why, when you reheat them, they become rancid. So, avoid using them for cooking, baking or frying. Rather, sprinkle or drizzle them over your meals at the end of cooking to enhance taste.

Turnips: Turnips are usually used in making soups. As they also contain nitrates, if reheated they can become toxic.

Mushrooms: Mushrooms are rich in proteins. They should be consumed the same day they are cooked. As they are enriched with proteins, their structure changes when reheated, which can be harmful to our body. When you eat reheated mushrooms, you put yourself at risk of digestive and even serous heart problems.

Beets: Beets are just like spinach. They contain high amount of nitrates that can cause a lot of discomfort once changed to nitrites after reheating.

Celery: Celery has a high nitrate content, hence, it can become toxic if you reheat it. Nitrate converts into nitrites once reheated. When too many nitrites enter the body, it increases the risk of methemoglobinemia. It's a condition in which the nitrites in your blood interact with hemoglobin and iron, making them incapable to carry oxygen to your living cells. Complications can include seizure or even death.
