11 get death penalty for killing Juba League leader

Staff Correspondent, Gazipur: 11 people have been awarded with death penalty for killing Juba League president of Kapasia upazila unit Jalal Sarkar.


Gazipur Additional District and Sessions judge Md Fazle Elahi Bhuiyan passed the order on Monday noon.


The judge also fined the convicts Tk 10,000 each.


Six of the 11 convicted were present at court during the delivery of the verdict and five others are still absconding.


The convicts who were awarded death penalty included Farhad Sarkar, Belayet Hossain Biltu, Faruk Hossain, Ataur Rahman, Jaynal Abedin and Ahmed Ali and the absconding convicts are Joj Mia, Al Amin, Mahbubur Rahman, Ahim Fakir and Jewel. 

 

All the accused belonged to the local BNP unit and its affiliated organisations.


Sarkar was hacked to death in public in the Upazila’s Balkhela Bazar area on August 17, 2003.


The court on Nov 17 fixed Nov 30 to deliver the verdict after the hearings had concluded.


The Court Police’s Inspector Md Rabiul Islam said that the convicts would get a chance to appeal against the death penalty in High Court within seven days.
