19 nurses fall sick in hunger strike

Staff Correspondent: At least 18 nurses have fallen sick on the second day of their hunger strike demanding recruitment of nurses based on batch, merit and academic seniority.

 

Of the injured, Nasrin Akter, Minara Akter and Parvin Akter were admitted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) as their conditions deteriorated on Friday.

 

Unemployed nurses went on hunger strike until death in front of National Press Club on Thursday after a continuous demonstration for long 25 days.

 

Members of two platforms- Bangladesh Diploma Bekar [unemployed] Nurses’ Association (BDBNA) and Bangladesh Basic Graduate Nurses’ Society (BGNS) went on strike on March 4 demanding the cancellation of recruitment published by Bangladesh Public Service Commission (BPSC).

 

BGNS President Razib Kumar Biswas said, "We are going with demonstration in front of the National Press Club for about a month. I do not know how many days we have to stay here without food and What will be conditions of the nurses who are now taking saline."
