Staff Correspondent: The government's imposition of countrywide ban on catching, transporting, marketing and selling of hilsa fish ends tonight.
Earlier, the authority had imposed a ban on catching, selling, hoarding and transportation of hilsa in different rivers for 22 days from October 12 in 27 districts to boost hilsa output through protection of the mother fish during its peak breeding season.
The duration of ban comes to an ends at 12:00am on Monday.
At the peak of the breeding season, lakhs of hilsas proceed from the sea to the coast, estuary, and rivers to lay eggs around this time. The eggs laid by each fish could produce lakhs of hilsa.
The hilsa fish are from the herring family and part of the Bengali cuisine and popular among a large population in India, Bangladesh, and other South East Asian countries – Malaysia, Thailand, China, Vietnam and Sri Lanka.
