Sport Desk: New Zealand have bowled out Bangladesh for 289 in the first day of the second and last Test of the two-match series at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Friday.

Winning the toss, New Zealand asked Bangladesh to bat first and the morning session saw Bangladesh scoring their runs at a rate of nearly five an over with 20 boundaries.

But Bangladesh fell under pressure by Southee and Boult who finally got some swing and reduced the visitors to 38 for two in the 11th over with Tamim Iqbal (five) and Mahmudullah (19) both caught by wicketkeeper BJ Watling.

Fifties from Soumya Sarkar and Shakib Al Hasan help Bangladesh carry on the fight on the first day of the second Test.

The pair began to counter attack to play their shots and raced through to 128 for two with numerous boundaries of the 15 the duo struck before lunch flying just wide of the hands of fielders down to the third man or fine leg fence.

Soumya Sarkar smashed 86 off 104 balls with 11 boundaries while Shakib’s innings ended on 59, made in 78 balls with nine fours.

The opener and Shakib made 127 in the third wicket after the visitors had lost Tamim Iqbal (5) and Mahmudullah (19) on just 38.

Boult finally broke the 127-run partnership after lunch when Soumya was caught by Colin de Grandhomme in the slips.

The Tigers, however, managed to score 289 runs losing all wickets, after the end of 84.3 overs.

To stop the Tigers, Trent Boult and Tim Southee picked up four and five wickets respectively.
