Bangladeshi Raju gets release from hospital after 5 months

Raju Sarker, a Bangladeshi worker contracted with deadly coronavirus in Singapore. He came close to death a few times. But he was determined to pull through.

Finally, he walked out of Tan Tock Seng Hospital on Friday, five months after his admission to the hospital.

Raju had spent nearly half of these five months in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). He was detected with coronavirus positive on February 8. He was case no 42.

In the meantime, he became father of a baby boy. His wife who lives in Bangladesh gave birth to their first child on March 30.

At that moment, Raju was in ICU. When the matter was brought to light, many responded to the call of a Singaporean charity, donated huge items ranging from diapers and baby food to Raju's wife.

In mid-April, Raju was shifted to general ward from the ICU. In mid-May, he was transferred to TTSH's rehabilitation centre as he spent long days in ICU.

Raju was a very sick patient when he was first admitted and was close to death two or three times.

“His blood pressure dropped to very low and he had very poor oxygenation. We thought he would need long-term oxygen support and were very worried that he would be one of the early deaths in Singapore,” said Dr Ho, who is also the director of ICU at National Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCID).

Despite being critically ill, Raju was determined to recover.
