Country’s 1st IGP Khaleque passes away

DHAKA, June 10: Abdul Khaleque, the country’s first Inspector General of Police, died on Monday due to old-age complications. He was 86.

Khaleque, also the country`s firt Home Secretary, breathed his last at United Hospital in the city around 12:25 pm.

He is survived by his wife, one son and one daughter and a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn his death.

Born in Comilla on March 1 in 1927, Khaleque joined the Bangladesh Police in 1951 and performed many important duties with various capacities.
One of the organisers of the War of Liberation in 1971, Khaleque called upon the police forces to build united resistance against the Pakistani occupation forces. He also declared not to join work till the country achieved its independence.

His first namaz-e-janaza was held at Rajarbagh Police Lines Central Jame Mosque after Asr prayers on Monday. He was laid to eternal rest at Banani Graveyard with full state honour.

Home Minister Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir, IGP Hasan Mahmud Khandker, Additional IG (Admn) AKM Shahidul Huq, DMP Commissioner Benazir Ahmed and senior police officials were present at the namaj-e-janaza.

Meanwhile, IGP Hasan Mahmud Khandker, and DMP Commissioner and president of Bangladesh Police Service Association Benazir Ahmed expressed their deep shock at the death of Khaleque.

They prayed for salvation of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.
