Court accepts Khaleda’s appeal, hearing Sunday

Staff Correspondent: The High Court has accepted an appeal petition filed by BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia challenging her sentence in the Zia Orphanage Trust case.

The court has also fixed on Sunday for hearing on her bail plea.

An HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Shahidul Karim came up with the order on Thursday.

Her lawyers submitted an 880-page bail petition in the morning showing 31 grounds for granting her bail.

Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Barrister Jamir Uddin Sarkar, Advocate Khandker Mahbub Hossain, Advocate AJ Mohammad Ali, Advocate Abdur Rezaque Khan and Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokan stood for Khaleda Zia. Attorney General Mahbubey Alam stood for the state. Khurshid Alam Khan was present on behalf of the ACC.


Earlier on Tuesday, lawyers of the BNP chairperson filed the appeal with the High Court challenging her sentence in the Zia Orphanage Trust.

On 8 February last, the Dhaka Special Court-5 convicted the former prime minister and BNP chairperson and sentenced her to five years’ imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

She was then sent to old central jail at Nazimuddin Road in the city.

Her lawyers have also sought acquittal from the case showing 44 grounds.
