Drug trader killed in Rajshahi gun-battle

Staff Correspondent, Rajshahi: A suspected drug peddler was killed in a gunfight with the members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Jamira village of Belpukur thana under Puthia upazila of the district early Monday.

The deceased was identified as Liakat Ali Mandal, 38, son of Jabbar Ali, hailed from Namaz village of the upazila.

Major AM Ashraful Islam, deputy commander of RAB-5 said acting on tip off that some drug peddler are selling drugs in the village, a team of RAB raided the area. Meanwhile, sensing presence of law enforcers, drug traders opened fire aiming RAB personnel which triggered the gun-battle, leaving Liakat bullet injured.

Later, he was rushed to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital where duty doctor declared him dead.

A foreign made pistol, a magazine, two rounds of bullets, a motorbike and 823 pieces of Yaba pills were seized from the spot.

The RAB official also said that Liakat Ali was wanted in 10 cases filed in Rajshahi and Natore.
