Staff Correspondent, DHAKA, Mar 12: An independent expert committee is going to be formed to help protect the Halda River, the country’s only breeding ground for carp fish.

Fisheries and Livestock Ministry took a decision of forming an expert committee at an inter-ministerial meeting held at its conference room on Tuesday.

The meeting also decided to work out a plan to resolve various problems facing by the important river.

The committee will measure the upstream water flow of the Karanaphuli and Halda rivers during the dry season to find out reasons behind their slowing down water flow.

Halda River originates at the Badnatali Hill Ranges at Ramgarh upazila  and flows through Fatikchhari upazila, Bhujpur upazilla, Hathazari upazila, Raozan upazila and Chandgaon Thana of the Chittagong Metropolitan City, and falls into the Karnaphuli River.

The 81 km long river has a very turbulent tributary. The river is the only pure breeding field of Bangladesh, perhaps in South Asia.
