Gautam Gambhir slams ICC for ridiculous rule

Sports Desk: Former Indian batsman Gautam Gambhir lashed out at ICC for 'ridiculous' rule after England won the ICC World Cup 2019 on the virtue of more boundaries scored in the final against New Zealand.

England defeated New Zealand in one of the most thrilling finals ever witnessed in the history of the World Cup to lift their maiden title at the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground in London on Sunday. It was a humdinger between the two teams which went down to the final ball of the game before England came out on top manging to win the Super Over on the virtue of more boundaries scored in the game.

Batting first, New Zealand posted a challenging total of 241 runs on the board in their quota of 50 overs riding on Henry Nicholls' 55 and Tom Latham's 47. England were dented early in the chase with New Zealand bowlers getting their team off to a good start. After the top-order failed to deliver, Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler posted a 110-run stand for the fifth wicket to keep England in the hunt.

Stokes slammed an unbeaten 84 off 98 balls to take the game down the wire. With 15 runs required off the 50th over, Stokes slammed two sixes to get 14 runs off it as the match headed into a Super Over. In the Super Over, England managed to score 15 runs after batting first, New Zealand in return also matched England's score of 15 as the Super Over too ended in a tie. However, England were adjudged the winner on the virtue of more boundaries scored (26) in comparison to New Zealand's 16.

Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir lashed out at the ICC terming the boundary count rule as 'ridiculous.' Gambhir felt after the Super Over got tied, it should have been a tie between the two teams instead of England getting crowned for hitting more boundaries in a high-pressure game of such magnitude.

"Don't understand how the game of such proportions, the #CWC19Final, is finally decided on who scored the most boundaries. A ridiculous rule @ICC. Should have been a tie. I want to congratulate both @BLACKCAPS & @englandcricket on playing out a nail biting Final. Both winners imo," Gambhir wrote on Twitter.

England became the third team to win the World Cup as hosts continuing the trend of the home teams lifting the coveted trophy after India (2011) and Australia (2015). Stokes was awarded the Man of the Match for his all-round show. He scored crucial 84 runs in England's chase and another important 8 runs in the Super Over before affecting the match-deciding run-out of Martin Guptill on the last ball of the final.
