Gmail will no longer support older versions of Chrome

Desk Report: Gmail won't support outdated versions of Google's Chrome browser as early as this December, the Menlo Park-based company announced Wednesday in a blog post.

Anyone using Chrome version 53 or older will be reminded by Google to update the browser via a banner at the top of his or her Gmail accounts.

"Gmail users that are still on Windows XP and Windows Vista are the most likely to be affected, because version 49 was the last released version which supported those operating systems," the post said. "...These systems are no longer maintained by Microsoft, and we strongly encourage you to migrate to more secure and supported systems."

Failing to upgrade could leave users vulnerable to security risks. They also won't have access to new features or bug repairs.

Gmail will still function on Chrome version 53 or below until the end of 2017, but users who don't upgrade will be redirected to a basic HTML version of the email service.
