Govt to buy 10 lakh tons of rice

Staff Correspondent, DHAKA, Mar 20: Food Minister Qamrul Islam on Thursday said that the government decided to buy 10 lakh tons of rice, one and half lakh tons of paddy and another one and half lakh tons of wheat from farmers in the country.

The Minister came up with the disclosure while briefing to a group reporters after a meeting of Food and Planning Committee, at the ministry secretariat, in the capital.

According to the decision, the government will buy rice at Tk. 31 per kg in current season while the wheat will be purchased by Tk. 27 per kg from the farmers.

The efforts to buy rice and paddy will begin by May 1 and continue till August 31 while buying wheat will start by April 1 and end June 30.

“As we will buy these from the farmers, they will be benefited and the prices of the agricultural products be ensured,” the Minister also added.
