HC stays tree-cutting decision in Jessore

Staff Correspondent: The High Court has stayed the decision to cut down century-old trees on both sides of Jessore-Benapole Highway for six months.

The bench of Justice Jubayer Rahman Chowdhury and Justice Iqbal Kabair passed the order on Thursday, following a writ petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh.

The court also issued a rule asking the government to explain why the decision to chop down the trees should not be declared illegal.

In its statement, the court said the government can continue development work of the road, but without chopping down the trees.

Recently, the government took the decision of chopping down trees on the highway.

However, since then, different environmental and social organizations are protesting the decision of cutting down century-old trees.
