Alamgir Hossain: bdnews started its journey in 2004 and it was the country’s first online news provider.  Later, I launched banglanews in 2010 and at present it is upholding the top position in Alexa ranking.

Risingbd: Why did you show your interest to apply use of information technology in the field of news service?

Alamgir: As a newsman I had thinking that how I can send information to receivers very quickly, and from the point of view it is truth that only technology can help make the subject possible. There is a facility in online that it can help both senders and receivers to share information.

Risingbd: Do you think online readers are enjoying freedom in our country?

Alamgir: No, I think they are not enjoying freedom. In developed countries, readers can express their opinions and share views through onlines. They can upload their writings. But, it is the truth that it is not possible to create such kind of environment in our country because many readers and writers cannot maintain disciplines.  We are hopeful our next generation will be able to create such environment through maintaining Disciplinary Status.

Risingbd: Do you think that new devices of information technology are playing an important role in popularizing online service?

Alamgir Hossain: Yes. New devices of information technology are playing an important role in popularizing online service in the world. Once, people would use desktop but it is now becoming very difficult to find out desktop. Now laptop has taken the position and in future tablet (known as tab) will drive out laptop from the market.  People are now using Smartphones, and use of 3G will be available in future. So, it can he said devices will play the key role increasing readers.

Risingbd: Please brief about 3G.

Alamgir Hossain: Four mobile phone operators in our country have launched 3G service and it has become mandatory to use smartphone and iphone in getting the service. The main facility of 3G service is that it will make internet browse very easy and speedy.

Risingbd: It is learnt that the government is going to a formulate policy for online news providers and what is your opinion about this?

Alamgir: Basically, there is no proper policy for print media in our country, then how it is possible for the government to formulate a policy for onlines.   In this regard, I opine that the government should set criteria that can help flourish the sector.

Risingbd: Can you mention how many online news portals in our country and how you will rank those?

Alamgir: There is no exact figure, but it may be over 300.  It is learnt that besides banglanews and bdnews, about 5/7 onlines are making well and these are paribartan, justnews, risingbd, natunbarta, bangamail, dhakatimes and some others.

Risingbd: Why you left the Ittefaq and did you think you have succeeded in the profession?

Alamgir: I started my career as a diplomatic correspondent with the Ittefaq after independence.  Leaving the Ittefaq, I was able to establish bdnews.  Later, I started my journey with banglanews on July 1 in 2010 and I think I have succeeded as banglanews is now holding the first position among online news providers in the country. So, I can say I have showed a hundred percent success.
