Staff Correspondent, DHAKA, Mar 18: With theme ‘If you protect jatka, you will get hilsa for 12 months’ the ‘Jatka Conservation Week-2014’ began today and it will continue.   


Fisheries and Livestock Minister Muhammed Sayedul Hoque inaugurated the week in the morning and led a procession that went round the different city streets.


Marking the week President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave separate messages.


The President said: “Hilsa is our national fish which plays an important role in our national economy from the time immemorial.”


He hoped that the people belonging to all professions, including fishermen, businessmen, public representatives and media, would come forward to make the week a success.

 

The Prime Minister said: “Hilsa is our national resources and the national fish is deeply linked with the life and living of the people and economy of the country from time immemorial.”


The fish is making a significant contribution to self-employment and earning foreign exchanges side-by- side with providing animal protein, she said.
