Lightning strikes claim 9 lives

Desk report: At least 9 people were killed by lightning strikes at several places in three districts of the country on Saturday.

In Pabna, three of a family among four people were killed in lighting strike at Pachuria village of the district’s Bera upazila.

The deceased were known as Mutaleb Sardar, 55, his sons Farid Sardar, 22, and Sharif Sardar, 18, and Raham Ali, 25. They are all the residents of Pachuria village.

Asif Anam Siddique, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Bera, said that they were killed while they were processing green jute for decomposition in a puddle.

In Mymensingh, four people were killed as they were struck by a streak of lightning in Tarakanda, Phulpur and Phulbaria upazilas of the district at noon.

The deceased were identified as Chand Mia, Sohagh Mia, 25, son of Abdul Mazid, and Jamal Uddin, 40, son of Wahed Ali and Choiton Barmon, 22, son of Molin Barmon. 

Imarat Hossain Gazi, officer-in-charge (OC) of Phulpur Police Station and Firoz Talukdar, officer-in-charge (OC) of Phulbaria Police Station confirmed their deaths.

In Rajshahi, a farmer was killed while working in the field at Benipur village in Charghat upazila in the afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Durul Huda, 40, of the village.

Matikata Union Parishad Chairman Md Ali Azam Towhid said Durul was struck by lightning when he was planting paddy around 3:00 pm. He was killed on the spot.
