N’ganj judge apologises before SC

Staff Correspondent: Narayanganj Joint District Judge Shafiqul Islam on Tuesday morning apologized unconditionally to the Supreme Court for not disposing of a civil suit filed in 2006 over faulty meter and extra electricity bill.

The judge apologized to the four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain.

Later, the bench ordered him to finish the proceedings of the case by April 15.

Earlier on February 7, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court summoned the judge to explain the reason behind his failure to dispose of the case.

Mac Papers Limited filed the case with a sub-ordinate court for declaring a 12 months’ bill of Titas Gas Company illegal.

On March 15, 2007, trial court rejected the case. The organization filed a case with the High Court challenging the verdict of the sub-ordinate court. Later, after final hearing , on July 4, 2008, a bench of the High Court gave the verdict asking the company to pay Tk 17 lakh every month. They were also directed to pay a regular bill of Tk 7.5 lakh per month. Besides, the sub-ordinate court was asked to dispose of the case by November 30, 2008.

Titas Gas authorities lodged a civil appeal against this verdict of the High Court. On February 7, hearing, the Appellate Division, during the observed uncommon delay in disposing of the case and summoned the judge to appear before it.
