No bar to return to post for mayor Ariful

Staff Correspondent: The Supreme Court (SC) has upheld a High Court (HC) order that scrapped the temporary suspension of Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury.

Now there is no bar to return to the post for mayor Ariful, claimed his lawyers.

A three-member bench of the Appellate Division of the SC headed by the Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order on Thursday.

Earlier on March 13, the High Court stayed the temporary suspension order for SCC mayor Ariful for six months.

Alongside, the court also asked the government not to create any bar to mayor Ariful to continue his office.

Apart from this, the court also issued a rule asking the authority concern as to why the temporary suspension order for mayoral ariful should not be declared illegal.

On December 30, 2016, a Habiganj court sent SCC mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury to jail in former finance minister Kibria murder case.

Later, Local Government Ministry temporarily suspended ariful from the post on January 7, 2015.

Ariful is currently on bail in the case.
