Staff Correspondent: Attorney General (AG) Mahbubey Alam said there is no legal bar to execute the condemned war criminal Jamaat leader Mir Quasem Ali as the Supreme Court (SC) rejected his review plea over the death sentence.
The AG came up with the reaction after SC had rejected Mir Quasem`s review petition upholding death sentence on Tuesday morning.
He said, "He (Mir Quasem) now will get chance to seek presidential clemency. Government can execute him any time once his mercy plea is rejected."
Expressing his satisfaction over SC`s verdict for Mir Quasem, AG said, "He committed many crimes during the liberation war in 1971. We would be disappointed if he was denied death sentence."
Earlier, a five-member Appellate Division bench headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha upheld death sentence for Jamaat leader Mir Quasem Ali for crimes against humanity during the liberation war in 1971, rejecting the petition seeking review of the verdict.
