No scope to import onions from India: Commerce Minister

Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi has said that there is no scope for the government to import onions from India. However, the businessmen can import through auction.

He said this while speaking at a programme marking the centenary celebration of Bhurungamari Pilot Government High School in Kurigram on Sunday.

“We are to import eight lakh tonnes of onions every year, of which 90 per cent are imported from India. Initiatives have been taken to increase facilities of the farmers, so that onion cultivation is increased. Our target is to meet the local demand through increasing local production within three years”, he said.

Aslam Hossain Saudagar, member of parliament of Kurigram-1 constituency, Zafar Ali, Zila Parishad chairman, and Sultana Parveen, deputy commissioner, were also present on the occasion.
