Rangpur city mayor resigns

Staff Correspondent, Rangpur: Rangpur City Corporation Mayor Sharfuddin Ahmed Jhantu has submitted a letter seeking resignation from his post of the city.

From now, the chief executive officer or administrative appointed by the Ministry of local government will lead the city corporation.

Md Akter Hossain Azad, Chief Executive Officer of the city, confirmed the news.

He said, "The mayor filed an application seeking resignation from his post on Tuesday morning.  The application has already been sent by airline to the Ministry of local government.

"The city corporation will run by the directives of local government ministry till a new mayor joined the office," he added.

Sharfuddin Ahmed Jhantu has again bagged nomination from the ruling Awami League (AL) for the upcoming election in the city.

He said over the resignation, "The received copy of the resignation letter is expected to return to Rangpur within the afternoon today. I'm set to submit nomination paper to the election office tomorrow."
