SC stays Khaleda's bail till Sunday

Staff Correspondent:  The Appellate Division of Supreme Court has stayed till Sunday the High Court verdict that granted bail to BNP Chief Khaleda Zia.

A five-member bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order on Wednesday.

The court also asked the state and Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) to file a petition for leave to appeal.

Advocate Zainul Abedin, also the Supreme Court Bar Association president, and senior lawyer AJ Mohammad Ali moved for Khaleda Zia while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam stood for the state and Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan stood for ACC.

On Tuesday noon, Appellate Division Chamber Judge Justice Hasan Fayez Siddique sent the petitions of ACC and the state to the full bench of the Supreme Court for hearing on Wednesday.

Earlier on Tuesday morning, the ACC and the state filed two petitions seeking a stay order on the bail granted to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

On Monday, the BNP chairperson got bail for four months in the case in which she was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment.
