Desk Report: Today (May 17) is the 37th homecoming day of Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
On May 17 in 1981, she returned to her motherland ending a long exile. The capital was turned into a city of procession as the countrymen welcomed Sheikh Hasina.
The then Kurmitola International Airport and Shere-E-Banglanagar turned into a human sea to welcome her.
Earlier on February 14, 15 and 16 in 1981 Awami League had elected Sheikh Hasina as party president at its council. After a long wait, a plane of Indian Airlines carrying Sheikh Hasina from Delhi via Kolkata landed at the airport at 4:30pm.
She was overwhelmed with emotions, which was apparent as she kissed the soil of her motherland immediately after getting off the aircraft.
The Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, along with his family members was brutally killed on August 15, 1975. Luckily his daughters, Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana, were in Germany then and became the lone survivors.
The Awami League has chalked out a seven-day programme marking the homecoming of its president.
