Hasan Mahamud: The Dhaka-Chittagong Expressway construction feasibility study is now underway. Dhaka-Chittagong Expressway may be connected with Asian Highway and the users who may use the Highway will have to give tolls on it.

After the budget announcement, the feasibility study of the construction may be prepared; sources from the planning commission confirmed this to risingbd.com.

Sources said, the Dhaka-Chittagong Expressway will be built on plain lands starting from Jatrabari while it will be ended at citygate of the port city.

"If this Expressway is constructed, most of the commodities and goods will be transported through this route," the planning commission sources said.

The sources also said, "And the neighboring countries like India, Nepal and Bhutan may use the route to use the Chittagong port for their respective purposes."

The Asian Highway (AH) project, also known as the Great Asian Highway, is a cooperative project among countries in Asia and Europe and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), to improve the highway systems in Asia.

It is one of the three pillars of the Asian Land Transport Infrastructure Development (ALTID) project, endorsed by the ESCAP commission at its 48th session in 1992, comprising Asian Highway, Trans-Asian Railway (TAR) and facilitation of land transport projects.

Agreements have been signed by 32 countries to allow the highway to cross the continent and also reach to Europe.

Some of the countries taking part in the highway project are India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, China, Japan, South Korea and Bangladesh.
