Trucks retake Tejgaon road

Ahmed Nur: Illegal truck stands have started to recapture the entire Tejgaon area of the capital city after one and a half years of eviction of illegal truck stand from there.

Innumerable trucks, mini-trucks, covered-vans, pickup vans occupied the roads and free spaces in the area. As a result, normal vehicular movements in the streets get hampered as the road becomes narrow.

However, the situation was quite different few days ago. People can move easily through the area.

In 2015, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) led by mayor Annisul Haque evicted illegal parking spaces from different parts of Tejgaon. This drive by DNCC facilitated traffic movement and reduced traffic jam.

But the influential quarters once again become active to grab the truck stand just after the death of the mayor. It was observed on Thursday and Friday that most of these areas have been recaptured by parking trucks randomly.

Mahsin, a truck driver said, "There is no place to park the truck in the capital. The late mayor promised us to build a truck stand. But, he did not do that. That’s why we are parking our trucks here."

Wishing anonymity, a police officer of Tejgaon Zone (Dhaka Metropolitan Police) said, "We have nothing to do in this regard."

Following the matter, Panel Mayor Osman Gani said that necessary steps will be taken after getting proper information.
