Two ‘drug traders’ killed in Cox’s Bazar ‘gunfight’

Two suspected drug dealers have been killed in a reported gunfight with police in Cox's Bazar's Teknaf upazila.

The incident occurred at Satghoria para under Whykong Unionof the upazila around 3.00am on Thursday.

The deceased are Jiabul Haq alias Babul, son of Shamsul Alam at Kanchonpara under Whykong union, and Mohammad Azimullah, son of Mohammad Kefaetullah at Shilkhali village under Baharchhara union.

Four policemen were also injured in the gunfight and they are Additional Police Super Taiwan Adnan, Sub Inspector Mohammad Sabbir and constables Abdul Shukkur and Mohammad Taijul.

Pradip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of Teknaf Police Station, said police arrested Jiabul Haq and Mohammad Azimullahon on Wednesday night. As per their confessional statement, a team of police along with them conducted a drive  in Satghoria para area to recover Yaba and arms.

As soon as police reached the area, their cohorts  opened fire at police prompting them to fire back in self-defence that triggered a gun battle, he said.

Bullet-hit Jiabul Haq and Mohammad Azimullahon were found lying on the ground after the gunfight, the OC said, adding that they were taken to Teknaf Health Complex where doctors referred them to Sadar Hospital. However, they were declared dead at the district hospital.

Police also recovered 5,000 Yaba tablets, six guns and 38 bullets from the spot, Pradip said.
