Walton introduces country’s first-ever smart fridge

Economic Reporter: The country’s electronics giant Walton has introduced the Bangladesh’s first-ever IoT (Internet of Things) based non-frost refrigerators with inverter technology’s compressor in the local market.

The local brand has called it ‘smart fridge’ as the users from any corner of the world can monitor Walton smart fridge’s power consumption units, daily or monthly electricity bill of it, compressors condition like overload or normal, power connection situation like on or off, and high or low voltage supply to it, in his/her mobile phone.

The Walton authorities disclosed these at the product introducing programme of “Bangladesh’ First-ever IoT Refrigerator at the conference room of Walton Head Office in the capital on Tuesday. Initially, Walton has released only one model of smart refrigerator in the local market. But, more models will be brought soon. Customers can purchase the country’s first-ever smart fridge from the nationwide Walton Plazas and distributors outlets from 23rd August, 2017 with a cost of Tk 53,200.

The function was attended by Walton Group Executive Director and Chief Coordinator of Marketing Eva Rezwana, Head of Marketing Amdadul Hoque Sarker, Senior Operative Director Uday Hakim, Senior Deputy Operative Director Abdul Malek Sikder and other higher officials of the company.

The engineers of Walton Fridge R&D (Research and Development) department said, huge power saving intelligent inverter technology based compressors are being used in Walton’s smart fridges. In addition, the compressors of this fridge are full of CFC and HFC free green gas R600a refrigerant, they said adding: “As a result, Walton smart fridges will consume more than 50 percent lesser electricity than that of general technology’s fridges.”

Dwelling on the technology of Walton smart fridge, they said, the control board of the fridge is featured with a WiFi module which will connect the device with the user’s home WiFi internet connection. And, customers can monitor the aforesaid settings of Walton smart fridge through installing ‘Walton Small Appliances’ in his/her smart phone.

Moreover, the users will receive notification if the electricity voltage goes high or low or even the fridge is overloaded or lighten or the compressor does not function well which will help them to take proper steps according to the situations.

Engineer Abdul Malek Sikder, head of Walton Refrigerator R&D department, said, the Walton smart refrigerators are being manufactured maintaining international standards and following the ‘Bangladesh Standards 1850:2012’ set by Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institute (BSTI). Walton is the only brand in Bangladesh that achieved ‘5-Star’ energy rating for refrigerator, he added.



Hoping that the new smart refrigerator will gain huge popularity among customers, Eva Rizwana said, introduction of smart refrigerator in local market is the result of continuous research of technology by Walton.

Thanking the R&D department for introducing the smart refrigerator, Amdadul Hoque Sarker said, Walton retains the top position in local refrigerator market. He informed that Walton registered 30.29 percent growth in fridge sales in the first seven months (January to July) of the current year comparing to the same period of last year and said over one lakh unit fridges were sold in a single in the first day of the current month. He hoped that the smart refrigerator will create new craze among customers.

Speaking on the occasion, Uday Hakim said, Walton has set up the country’s one of the largest Research and Development department at Walton Hi-Tech Industries in Chandra of Gazipur where foreign and local skilled, experienced and hard working engineers are conducting continuous research to present customers latest technology based products. Walton has created another surprise by introducing smart refrigerator for the first time in the country.

Mentionable, Walton refrigerators which are being manufactured ensuring healthier food preservation at 43 degree Celsius for Bangladesh are released in the market after checking quality at the Bangladesh Accreditation Board recognized and ISO certified NUSDAT-UTS lab. Zero tolerance policy is being followed in quality control which led Walton to provide one-year replacement guarantee for refrigerators along with maximum 10-year replacement guarantee for compressors.
