We will accept people’s mandate: PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina talks to media after casting her vote at Dhaka City College centre

Staff Correspondent: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has stated that she and her party ruling Awami League will accept people’s mandate in the ongoing City Corporation polls.

The premier came up with the assertion while talking to journalists after she cast her vote at Dhaka City College centre in capital’s Dhanmondi area on Tuesday morning.

Earlier, voting began in the centre at 8.00 am with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina cast her vote.

The Prime Minister said that she cast her vote to Panpata (Betel Leaf), Ghuri (Kite) and hilsha, which is the poll symbol of Awami League backed mayoral candidate Sayeed Khokan.

“I have applied my constitutional rights,” she said just after the casting her vote.

The Prime Minister also hoped the elections would be free, fair and creditable and said she and her party fought for arranging a fair election.

When asked about BNP’s declaration that they would again started their movement if the results of the election do go for them, she said: ‘It means they won’t accept the people’s mandate.’

“People have no attachment with BNP-Jamaat’s movement, she added.

Slamming BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia about her call to people ‘take money but cast your vote according to your choice’ Sheikh Hasina said: “They know that people won’t vote them, so they wanted to buy it paying money,”

Voting in three city corporations (Dhaka South, North and Chittagong) is underway today.
