Zia’s 82nd birth anniversary today

Senior Reporter: Today (January 19) is the 82nd birth anniversary of former President Ziaur Rahman, the founder of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

On this day in 1936, Zia was born at Bagbari under Gabtoli upazila of Bogra.

He founded BNP in 1978 and become the7th president of Bangladesh.

To observe the day, BNP and its associate organisations have chalked out a weeklong programme across the country.

BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, the widow of the party founder Ziaur Rahman, along with its leaders and activists placed wreaths at the grave of Ziaur Rahman at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.

Doctors' Association of Bangladesh has arranged a daylong free medical camp at BNP's Nayapaltan central office.

BNP's associate organizations and district committees have also planned various programs, including discussion and milad mahfil, to mark the day.

Besides, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir issued a message on the occasion showing profound homage to late Zia.

Zia was assassinated by a cable of army officers at Chittagong Circuit House on the night of May 30, 1981. Since then, BNP is headed by his wife Khaleda Zia.
