AL replies to BNP over Rampal Power Plant

Staff Correspondent: Publicity and publication affairs secretary of Awami League Dr Hasan Mahmud said BNP has been trying frantically to remain in politics like parasitic plant snatching an issue of others.

"BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia has been trying to mislead the people providing fabricated and false information on Rampal Coal-fired Power Plant.

It (BNP) has been trying to create anarchy by misleading people," he said.

Dr Hasan Mahmud, also chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Environment and Forests Ministry, said this while speaking at a press conference at the political office of Awami League president Sheikh Hasina at Dhanmondi in the city on Friday.

He said Awami League along with the people would resist the conspiracy of the BNP-Jamaat combine, as it did in the past, if it tries to create anarchy in the country centring the Rampal Coal-fired Power Plant.

Pointing to the leaders of the National Committee for protection of oil-gas, mineral resources, power and port, Dr Hasan Mahmud said, "It`s a good sign to have anxiety and tension over the national resources but extra-anxiety and tension over any matter raises many questions in public mind."

"Please place your statement to the government if you have any. But, don`t strengthen the hands of those who want to push the country into a failed state by transforming it into a militant one," he added.

Terming the statement made by BNP chairperson at a recent press conference on the Rampal Coal-fired Power Plant as fabricated and false, the Awami League leader said, "The distance of the power plant from the Sundarbans is 14 kilometres and 70 kilometres from the UNESCO announced heritage site and 97 kilometres from Hiron Point. No arable land has been damaged or dwelling houses evicted for construction of the power plant."

Dr Hasan Mahmud highlighted on the worthlessness of Begum Zia`s statement by presenting photographs and data relating to coal transportation, removal of different chemical reagents and generated ash, temperature (warming) of the Pashur River, flow of wind and sound regarding the power plant.

The Awami League (AL) leader also called upon the advisers of Begum Khaleda Zia to go deep into any matter prior to giving advice to their party chairperson.

Awami League (AL) office secretary Dr Abdus Sobhan Golap, relief and social welfare affairs secretary Faridunnahar Laily, AL Central Working Committee members Sujit Roy Nandi and Aminul Islam Amin were present, among others.
