Staff Correspondent: The baby Suraiya, who was struck by a bullet while in her mother’s womb, returned home today after one-month treatment in hospital.

Health Minister Mohammed Nasim handed over the baby to its parents on Thursday noon at a programme at Dhaka Medical College Hospital conference room in the city.

Meanwhile, the Minister also handed over Tk.65,000 to the parents of Suraiya. Later, the family started their journey to Magura by an ambulance.

Mohammed Nasim said that one such type of bullet hit incident took place in Brazil but the doctors could not able to save the baby. However, the doctors of Dhaka Medical College successfully made a history saving the baby Suraiya after one month treatment.

The Health Minister thanked the doctor and nurses for the success.

Earlier, on July 23, the mother Najma, was shot in her abdomen while eight months pregnant with baby Suraiya, when she accidentally stepped in the line of fire as one militant political faction staged an attack on another in Magura.

Najma was rushed to a hospital and little Suraiya was born after a three-hour emergency Cesarean and surgery and the baby girl was immediately transferred to an intensive care unit.

The bullet had gone through Suraiya`s right shoulder and damaged her right eye in the womb, but amazingly the child made excellent progress and survived without any permanent damage.
