Ban v SA, 2nd Test: More rain on third morning

Sports Correspondent: Non-stop rain has delayed the start of third day of the second and final Test of a two-match series between Bangladesh and South Africa  at Mirpur in Dhaka.

On Friday, heavy rain washed out the second day of the Test match.

On the first day, Bangladesh showed a modest batting performance and scored 246 runs for 8 wickets at the first day of the second and final Test .

Bangladesh ended the day at 246/8 in 88.1 overs after skipper Mushfiqur Rahim won toss and chose to bat first at Shere Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur.

South Africa fast bowler Dale Steyn who began the match with 399 Test wickets struck early in the morning to make Tamim Iqbal (6) his 400th prey.  The 32-year old Protea bowler played only 80 Test matches to reach the milestone.

The hosts lost their first wicket for only 12 runs. However, Bangladesh opener Imrul Kayes and middle-order batsman Mominul Haque then made a 69-run partnership to rebuild the early loss.

The duo added 63 runs as Bangladesh were 75/1 in 29 overs at lunch. However, JP Duminy stuck twice just after lunch to dismiss Mominul and Kayes. Duminy, in his second over, made Monimul Haque caught by the wicketkeeper Dane Vilas in the fourth over after lunch.

Haque scored 40 runs as Bangladesh lost second wicket for 81. Duminy, in his next over, also made Imrul Kayes LBW. Kayes scored 30 runs as Bangladesh lost third wicket for only 86.

From there, Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur Rahim added 68 runs before Tea. Bangladesh were 154/3 in 55 overs at Tea. Their 4th wicket partnership broke at 94 when Dale Steyn made Mahmudullah caught by Temba Bavuma in the 63rd over. Mahmudullah scored 35 runs hitting 3 fours as Bangladesh lost 4th wicket for 180.

However, Mushfiqur Rahim was firm and reached his fifty taking a single in the last delivery of 57th over bowled by JP Duminy. The Bangladesh skipper hit 7 boundaries on his way to half-century.

However, South Africa captain Hashim Amla brought opener Elgar who also bowls left-arm spins in the 73rd over. Elgar, in his second over, made Mushfiqur caught by wicketkeeper Vilas. Mushfiqur scored 65 runs as Bangladesh lost 5th wicket for 215.

Bangladesh also lost Liton Das (3) only adding five runs more. This time Das was caught by Elgar off Duminy. Elgar also caught No. 1 all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan off Morne Morkel in the 88th over. Shakib scored 35 runs hitting four boundaries.

Steyn also bowled Mohammad Shahid (1) in the first delivery of 89th over with which umpires called Stumps for the day.

Nasir Hossain was unbeaten on 13.

Steyn bowled 16.1 overs and claimed 3 wickets for 30 while Duminy bagged more 3 for 27 in 15 overs. Elgar and Morkel shared the rest of the two wickets between them.

Bangladesh added an extra offspinner, allrounder Nasir Hossain, in place of left-arm spinner Taijul Islam but otherwise named an unchanged XI. Liton Das would keep wicket again to free up Mushfiqur to lead the side and concentrate on his batting.

South Africa also made one change to their playing XI as Dane Vilas made his debut as wicketkeeper in place of Quinton de Kock.
