Chumki visits bullet-hit infant at DMCH

State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroz Chumki

Medical Correspondent: State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroz Chumki on Tuesday went to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) to see the newborn from Magura, who was hit with bullet in her mother`s womb.

The state minister visited the baby and her mother around 11.00am. She then handed over a check of Tk. 50,000 from the government to Nazma Khatun, mother of the bullet-hit infant.

The baby was injured when her eight-month pregnant mother was shot in the abdomen during an attack by a Chhatra League faction on another faction on July 23 in Magura, that left one killed and another person injured.

The bullet went through the unborn baby`s right shoulder and damaged her right eye. She survived a two-hour Caesarean on her 35-year-old mother, Nazma Khatun at Magura General Hospital.

The baby was sent to the DMCH on July 26 without her mother, as her situation was critical.

Meher Afroz Chumki told journalists that the condition of the bullet-hit baby is not fully out of danger. The doctors are trying their best in treating the baby. However, her mother is much better now, she added.

Chumki also told journalists that so far six people were arrested in the incident. Law enforcers are trying to nab others.

The state minister also visited three children who were undergoing treatment at the hospital after being raped in different parts of the city.
