Rony to be convicted for double murder

Staff Correspondent: There won’t be any legal complexities to convict Bakhtiar Alam Rony, son of a ruling party lawmaker, for killing two people by firing gunshot even if the accused does not provide confessional statement.

Rony fired gunshots that killed a rickshaw-puller and an auto-rickshaw driver at New Eskaton in Dhaka on April 13 midnight, police said.

“We have enough supporting evidence to believe that it was Rony’s pistol from which the shots were fired,” Joint Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police`s Detective Branch, Monirul Islam said.

“Rony earlier confessed to us that he himself fired the shots. However, he is not willing to give confessional statement,” he said while speaking at a press briefing at Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) headquarters.

It is a well detected case and there will be no problem in proving the case at the court without confessional statement of Rony.” he said while speaking at a press briefing at Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) headquarters.

The son of ruling Awami League lawmaker Pinu Khan fired random shots in the air in a drunken rage for what he said “being frustrated over post-midnight traffic” on the night of April 13.

Rony’s friends, who were with him during the incident, testified before a magistrate and accused Rony for firing the gunshots in a drunken state on that night.

Ballistic reports have confirmed that the gun, that was licensed to Rony, was used to fire shots that led to the death of the auto-rickshaw driver and a rickshaw puller.

Police repeatedly asserted that they were not extending any favour to Rony and the investigation officer pleaded not to let the MP’s son out on bail fearing that he can influence the probe.

On the night of April 13, the driver of a CNG-run auto-rickshaw of the daily Janakantha and a rickshaw-puller were shot by Rony in Dhaka’s New Eskaton area.
