EC to consider new voters in next UP polls

Staff Correspondent: The Election Commission is mulling to provide scope for new voters in Union Parisad elections across the country from March 2016.

Election Commission sources said that the commission is planning Union Parishad (UP) elections after municipality polls in December where new voters would be allowed to cast their votes.

Following the issue, Election Commission Secretary Sirajul Islam said that Election Commission has already collected the details of 4,553 Union Parishads and the officials of EC were directed to be ready for the poll.   

The current tenure of the Union Parishads will end between March and July this year. The Election Commissioner said that the schedule of the elections might be set in January next year.

According to the rule, Union Parishad elections have to be held within six months after the expiry of its previous tenure.
