International Desk: Donald Trump laid into the United Nations, calling the international body a “club for people” to “have a good time.”
“The United Nations has such great potential but right now it is just a club for people to get together, talk and have a good time. So sad!” Trump said Monday on Twitter.
Trump’s remarks came days after the UN adopted an anti-Israel resolution condemning West Bank and Jerusalem settlements.
Trump pushed for the United States to veto the resolution — but President Obama instructed his administration to abstain from the vote, which allowed for its passage.
Pro-Israel Republicans and Democrats alike have decried Obama’s eleventh-hour change in the US’ Israel policy.
After the resolution was adopted, Trump warned that his inauguration would shake up the UN: “As to the U.N., things will be different after Jan. 20th,” Trump tweeted Friday.
The US annually gives around $8 billion to the United Nations and affiliated organizations. It is unknown whether Trump plans to cut funding to the international body when he takes office next month.
