Janmashtami being observed

Desk Report: Janmashtami, marking the birth of Lord Krishna, is being observed today (Thursday) with due religious fervour.


According to Hindu religion, Lord Vishnu incarnated in the universe as Lord Krishna in the prison of Raja Kangsa on this day, the eighth of ‘Shukla Pakkha’ (bright fortnight) in the month of Bengali calendar Bhadra in Dwapara Yuga in order to protect ‘Dharma’ from the hands of devils.


Sri Krishna was born to Devaki and her husband Vasudeva in Mathura to which Krishna’s parents belonged.


Hindu community members will bring out processions in the capital, divisional cities and district towns displaying the eventful life of Krishna and hold other programmes on the occasion.


President Abdul Hamid will host a reception at Bangabhaban marking the day.


The day is a public holiday.


Meanwhile, the president and prime minister Sheikh Hasina in separate messages greeted the members of Hindu community on the occasion of Janmashtami.


In his message on the eve of the occasion, the President said the ideals of Sri Krishna were to forge the bond of true love and amity between man and man, removing conflicts.

"He always looked for the path of emancipation for mankind," he added.

The President said Bangladesh is a country of religious harmony and followers of all religions observe their rituals maintain mutual harmony and amity in the country.

Welfare of mankind the essence of all religions, he said and added that all should remain alert so that none can create anarchy in society using religion.


In her message, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said her government is pledged-bound to maintain communal harmony in the country.

"Bangladesh is a country of communal harmony where people of caste and creed have been living in harmony for ages," she said.

The Prime Minister said the only objective of Lord Krishna was to establish parity in society and friendship among people.

"He (Lord Krishna) had upheld the flag of peace, love for humanity and justice throughout his life. He used to adore truth and beauty through his work and lifestyle," she added.
