Mabia wins gold for Bangladesh

Sport Desk: Athlete Mabia Akter has won first gold for Bangladesh in 63kg weightlifting event at the 2016 South Asia Games in India on Sunday.

The champion weightlifter lifted 67kg in snatch and 82kg in clean and jerk.

Earlier, lifter Fullapati Chakma clinched a silver medal for Bangladesh in women’s 58-kg weight category weightlifting at the same venue on Sunday.

With Mabiya’s success, Bangladesh now has 11 medals in the bag. Eight bronze, two silver and a gold so far.

The South Asian Games 2016 is a major multi-sport event taking place from February 5 to February 16.

A total of 2,672 athletes are scheduled to compete in 228 events over 23 sports.
