Parliament Correspondent: The Members of Parliament (Remuneration and Allowances (Amendment) Bill, 2016 was passed unanimously in the Jatiya Sangsad today for increasing remuneration and allowances of the members of parliament.

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq moved the bill in the House, which seeks amendments to the Members of Parliament (Remuneration and Allowances) Order, 1973.

While moving the bill, the minister told the House that the remuneration, allowances and facilities were fixed earlier according to the Members of Parliament (Remuneration and Allowances) Order, 1973.

The bill proposed raising remuneration and other benefits of the MPs in line with the eighth pay scales for the government employees.

The bill proposed raising the remuneration of each MP to Taka 55,000 from Taka 27,500, expenditure allowance to Taka 5,000 from Taka 3,000, daily allowance to Taka 750 from Taka 300, discretionary fund to Taka 500,000 from Taka 300,000, monthly expenses in the electoral area to Taka 12,500 from existing Taka 7,500, transport allowance (monthly) Taka 70,000 from Taka 40,000, internal travel
allowance (annually) Taka 1,20,000 from Taka 75,000, monthly laundry allowance Taka 1,500 from Taka 1,000 and the allowances for cookeries and others to Taka 6,000 from Taka 4,000.

The House, with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair, passed the bill through voice votes.
