Municipality polls: BNP to decide on participating

Staff Correspondent:  BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia is going to sit with her party’s senior leaders tonight (Wednesday night) to decide whether they will participate in the upcoming municipality polls or not.

Khaleda’s media wing member Shamsuddin Didar confirmed the matter to risingbd.com this afternoon.

Party insiders said that the BNP chief called upon the meeting to discuss the country’s overall situation and find out the party’s next course of action.

They also said that Khaleda will seek opinions of the senior leaders about joining the municipality polls scheduled for December 30 and finalise the decision in this regard.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad on Tuesday announced that elections to 234 municipalities across the country will be held on December 30.

The municipal elections will partly be held under party line for the first time as Parliament passed the Local Government (Municipality) Bill 2015 on November 19, clearing the way for mayoral candidates to contest the elections with party symbols.

It will be Khaleda’s the first meeting with her party’s leaders since her return from London after over two months of stay there.
