Staff Correspondent, Jessore: A Narail court has summoned Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson Khaleda Zia in a case filed over raising questions about the number of Liberation War martyrs.
Judge of Narail Senior Judicial Magistrate Court Jahidul Azad on Monday ordered Khaleda Zia to appear before it on August 23.
A Rayhan Faruki Imam at Chapail village under Naragati Thana filed the case with the Narail court on December 24, 2015 for making a controversial statement about the number of martyrs during the Liberation War.
On 21 December, the BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia said at a discussion in the city that there was a controversy over the actual number of martyrs during the country’s Liberation War.
“There`s a lot of debate over the actual number of martyrs. It is said that a certain million [3 million] embraced martyrdom during the war. How many martyrs were there in reality?” said Khaleda.
Her comments sparked protest among different quarters and on social media.
