Staff Correspondent: A Dhaka court has upheld three years imprisonment for OC Helaluddin given by Metropolitan Court in former Dhaka University (DU) student Kader torture case.

Judge Jahidul Kabir of Dhaka`s Fifth Additional Metropolitan Session Judge Court upheld the punishment on Wednesday.

Earlier, Judge Alamgir Kabir of Dhaka`s Additional Chief Metropolitan Court sentenced then Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Khilgaon Police Station to three years imprisonment on May 17 last year.

The court also fined him Tk. 10,000, in default, he is to serve three more months in jail.

OC Helal challenged the verdict of Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court in June last year.

The OC, currently on bail granted by High Court, has been suspended temporarily. He is currently attached to Rajarbag police lines.

In July 2011, former Khilgaon Police Station (OC) Helaluddin detained Dhaka University student Abdul Kader and tried to force him to confess that he was a mugger.

Helal struck Kader’s leg with a machete after he refused to give in to pressure.

Kader filed the case against Helaluddin in January 2012.

According to the statement he gave in the court, police stopped him at Segun Bagicha when he was returning to Fazlul Haque Muslim Hall.

Plaincloth police men beat him in the leg with sticks and took him to Khilgaon Police Station, he said.

OC Helaluddin beat and injured him to force a confession, he alleged.

Having failed to make him admit the crime he did not commit, the police officer struck Kader in the leg with a machete, he said.
