Only 1 aspirant to be nominated for mayoral post

Staff Correspondent:  The Election Commission (EC) said that only one candidate can submit nomination papers from a political party for a mayoral candidature.

The EC made the declaration on Wednesday evening.

EC’s director (public relations) SM Asaduzzaman sent a press release to the media.

The press release said that a political party will be able to nominate a single mayoral candidate in the municipality polls. The candidature of all of the mayoral candidates of a political party will be cancelled if more than one of the mayoral candidates file nomination papers from that party.

Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakib Uddin Ahmad announced the schedule for municipality polls yesterday.

Contacted, SM Asaduzzaman said that the political parties are allowed to primarily give nomination to more than one of the candidates in parliamentary elections, but the municipality law does not allow them to do so.

The EC is going to arrange elections to 234 municipalities across the country on 30 December.
