PM’s press conference on Rampal today

Staff Correspondent: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will hold a press conference on the proposed coal-fired Rampal Power Plant near the Sundarbans today (Saturday).

The press briefing will be held at 4 pm her official residence Gonobhaban, Prime Minister’s Deputy Press Secretary Ashraful Alam confirmed on Friday.

Sources from Power Division confirmed that the Prime Minister will express her opinions regarding the Rampal plant and hopefully will answer the critics of the project.

The construction of the power plant has become a controversial issue as the mangrove forest is situated about 14 kilometres away from the proposed 1,320-megawatt power plant site.

On Wednesday, BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia criticized the Rampal project and demanded scraping of the project as soon as possible.

The power plant project is a joint venture of Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) and the National Thermal Power Corporation Limited of India under the name of Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company.
