`Police straggled to ensure security during Boishakh celebration`

Parliament Correspondent: Police were straggling to ensure security during the Pohela Boishakh celebration as gathering poured in to celebrate the Bengali New Year, State Minister for Home Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has said.

The junior minister made the disclosure while answering a question of independent lawmaker Tahzib Alam Siddiqui at the question-and-answer session of budget for financial year 2015-16 on Monday morning.

Regretting the incident, he said, "The culprits who had committed the heinous offence have been identified. Some of them already have been detained."   

At least 20 women were reported to have been sexually assaulted while returning home after celebrating the Bengali New Year on the Dhaka University campus on last April 14.

The sexual harassment of women continued there even though police personnel were on duty nearby. Some of the offenders were reportedly handed over to police but they were later released.
