Possibility of exporting manpower to Saudi Arabia should be utilised

Saudi Arabia has officially lifted a six-year-old ban on recruiting workers from Bangladesh. The country did not recruit any workers from other sectors except domestic workers in last six years. Now there is no bar to sending workers to Saudi Arabia from Bangladesh due to the lift of the six-year-old ban.

The decision will benefit a total of 48 categories of workers including skilled, unskilled and professionals such as doctors, nurses, teachers, farm and construction workers. The ban did not apply to female domestic workers who make up for 60,000 of the 1.3 million Bangladeshis working in the kingdom. Around 5 lakh Bangladeshis more are illegally staying there.

Channels for recruitment from Bangladesh was reopened after talks between Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud at Jeddah in June.

Employment for Bangladeshis is increasing significantly abroad. Around 303, 284 Bangladeshis have so far flown abroad with job opportunity in 2016. Various training centers have been set up in a bid to build a skilled manpower during the tenure of the incumbent government. According to the Ministry for Expatriates` Welfare and Overseas Employment, those Bangladeshis who are now staying abroad have sent nearly US$ 4, 769.88 million to the country till May 29 this year. Around 555, 881 Bangladeshis belonging to skilled, semi skilled and unskilled have gone abroad with job opportunity in 2015 and sent US$ 15, 270.99 million to the country.

Bangladeshi workers have enough goodwill abroad.  We have seen many reports in the media that our female domestic workers are tortured and abused. But the government of both the countries is not seen to take effective steps resolve the issue. For this reason, a negative notion about this sector has developed in our country. It is now necessary to overcome the situation. We have to utilise the possibility of exporting manpower to Saudi Arabia. To do so, we all have to take necessary steps in this regard. Side by side, International labour law should be followed.

Remittance will be increased if we are able to utilise the possibility of exporting manpower to Saudi Arabia. The country’s economy will be flourished.
