Secretariat Correspondent: The election of student cabinet in secondary schools, dakhil madrassahs and technical institutions will be held on August 8.

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid made the announcement at his office at Secretariat on Wednesday morning.

He said this year the election will be held in 1,043 institutions in experimental basis. From next year all secondary level schools will have their own cabinets to facilitate development of democratic norms among the students, the education minister added.

He said that teachers would appoint the election commissioners from among the students for holding the elections.

The tenure of the eight-member student cabinet will be one year, and students from classes VI to X will have voting rights.

After the election, one of the members of the cabinet will be elected as the Prime Minister by voice vote. He/she will distribute portfolio among his or her cabinet, emulating a parliamentary democracy.

Aspiring students submitted their nomination papers on July 28.

There will be ministers for education, mid-day meal, environment, health, water resource, teaching material, cultural affairs and sports, reception of guests and others, as per recommendations of general students.

Earlier in 2010, primary school children had chosen their leaders – members of student councils – at some 100 government primary schools in 20 upazilas. Such elections were held in almost all the government primary schools across the country in 2013, 2014 and the current year.

Students of Classes III, IV and V took part in these elections.
