None can influence EC: Nurul Huda

Staff Correspondent: Freshly installed Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda said none has scope to influence the Election Commission (EC) as it is a constitutional body.

KM Nurul Huda made the assurance while he was briefing media at Election Commission Secretariat in Dhaka at around 5:00pm on Wednesday, hours into he took oath as the chief election commissioner.

KM Nurul Huda vowed to hold a free, fair and credible election upholding professional and constitutional responsibilities.

In reply to a query, he said, “We will not be influenced in any circumstances by anyone. Stern action will be taken if any official of the Election Commission is found to help any political party during the election.”

Earlier, Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha administered the oath of the new CEC and the four election commissioners at the Supreme Court Judges' Lounge in Dhaka around 3:00pm.

SC Registrar General Syed Aminul Islam conducted the oath-taking ceremony. Judges of the Appellate Division of the SC were present at the programme.
