Teachers of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) in Sylhet

SUST Correspondent: In a bid to oust the university`s Vice-Chancellor Prof Aminul Haque Bhuiyan, the teachers of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) have continued their work abstention programmes till on second day (today).

On behalf of their programmes, the teachers of the university have organised rallies and processions in the campus.

According to the pre-scheduled programme, the teachers from separate departments took part in the protests programme around 11.30 am on the day.

Earlier, the activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on Sunday morning attacked a teachers’ demonstration at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) in Sylhet.

The teachers were staging protests demanding the removal of the university`s Vice-Chancellor Prof Aminul Haque Bhuiyan.

The teachers have been demonstrating for the last few months for the VC`s removal. Meanwhile, the VC convened an Academic Council meeting at 3:00pm today, triggering tension in the campus.

Teachers under the banner of ‘Mohan Muktijuddher Chetonay Udbhuddo Sikkhak Forum’ were also set to stage sit-in programme in front of academic building in the morning.

As soon as the teachers went there, Chhatra League activists snatched their banners and locked in scuffle with them. Several teachers were assaulted at that time.

“You have seen what happened. I will not say a single word on this matter. No comments,” said Jalalabad police OC Aktar Hossain, who was present at the spot.

SUST BCL unit President Partha said, "It was not an organisational decision to stop demonstrating teachers. Those who joined to stop them (demonstrating teachers) exercised personal choice."
